What Back Pain Reveals About How You Move

Back pain doesn't look the same for everyone. Some people are recovering from an injury or surgery. Others have lived with recurring or chronic back pain for years. Some simply notice that everyday movement doesn't feel as easy as it once did.

No matter how your symptoms began, the way your body has adapted often provides the biggest clues. These are the kinds of things we hear every day.

Can Pilates Help Back Pain?

Yes—but not all Pilates is the same.

If twenty people with back pain walk into a room together, they don't all need the same exercises.

Some need to improve mobility before building strength. Others need more stability before increasing their range of motion. Some are hoping to return to running or lifting weights, while others simply want to sit through a workday or travel comfortably again.

Some people want a therapeutic experience. Others are ready for a safely athletic challenge.

Private Pilates allows every session to be adapted to your body, your symptoms, and your goals.

Research suggests Pilates may help improve pain, function, strength, and confidence for many people with persistent back pain. That said, we don't believe Pilates is the right solution simply because someone has back pain. That's why every new client begins with a comprehensive assessment before we recommend a plan.

Here's what recovery can look like.

Increasing mobility and flexibility for lower back and sciatica

“I started at Dynamic Body Pilates seeking help for low back pain primarily and I also wanted to run for fitness but couldn't. Well, now I can run. Currently I work with Sarah, and look forward to her calming guidance in my weekly sessions in the studio. The sessions are designed specifically for me. When I leave the studio, I feel great. During the week, my self-practice is informed by what I've learned in the studio. It works!

Why We Look Beyond Your Back

One of the biggest surprises for new clients is that we don't spend every session focused on their back. Sometimes we do. Other times, we may be working on hip mobility, breathing, posture, balance, or strength somewhere else in the body.

That isn't because we're ignoring where you hurt.

Your back doesn't move in isolation. When another area is stiff, weak, or not contributing well, your spine often ends up working harder to compensate. Improving how your whole body moves can reduce the stress placed on your back.

During their assessment, many clients also mention things like:

  • Neck or shoulder tension
  • Sciatica
  • Hip pain
  • Knee pain
  • Headaches
  • Poor balance
  • Feeling unusually stiff

At first, those symptoms can seem unrelated. But your body doesn't organize itself by diagnosis. That's one reason we look at how your entire body is moving—not just where it hurts.

"Your back is rarely the only thing that's changed. By the time it hurts, the rest of your body has often adapted around it. Watching how you move helps us understand those adaptations and build a plan that's designed specifically for you."
Rebecca Lubart, Founder, Dynamic Body Pilates

One client described it this way:
"It turns out my neck and back issues were partly due to imbalances in my legs and feet. No other practitioner had raised that issue before." — Andrew M.

When your body is in pain, it naturally finds ways to protect itself. Some muscles become tighter while others stop contributing as much. You may begin shifting more weight to one side, avoiding certain movements, or relying on one area to do work that used to be shared throughout your body.

Those adaptations often begin as protection. Over time, they can also become part of what's keeping you in pain.

That's why every new client begins with a Dynamic Body Assessment Session. Before deciding which exercises are appropriate, we first observe how your whole body moves. That gives us a clearer picture of what's contributing to your pain and allows us to create a plan that's designed specifically for your body—not just your diagnosis.

What to Expect in Private Pilates for Back Pain

No two people experience back pain the same way, so no two sessions should look exactly alike. Some clients come in after a recent injury. Others have lived with recurring pain for years. Some are hoping to get back to running or lifting weights. Others simply want to sit through a workday or travel without worrying about their back.

Your sessions are designed around your goals, your movement patterns, and how your body responds—not around a standard back pain routine.

During your sessions, you might work on:

  • Improving strength and stability throughout your body
  • Increasing mobility where movement has become restricted
  • Reducing unnecessary tension and protective muscle guarding
  • Improving balance and coordination
  • Building confidence with movements you've been avoiding
  • Learning strategies to manage flare-ups and move more comfortably between sessions

Rather than pushing through pain, we meet your body where it is and gradually build strength, control, and confidence over time.

Because sessions are one-on-one, your practitioner can continually adjust exercises based on how you're feeling that day and how your body is responding.

Is Private Pilates Right for Your Back Pain?

Private Pilates can be appropriate for many different types of back pain, including people who are:

• Recovering from a back injury
Living with chronic low back pain
• Managing disc-related conditions
• Experiencing sciatica
• Dealing with scoliosis
• Returning to exercise after pregnancy
• Recovering after surgery (with medical clearance)
• Looking to stay active while managing age-related changes

Because every person is different, we don't believe in promising that Pilates is the right solution for everyone.

That's why every new client begins with a conversation and a comprehensive assessment.

If we believe another healthcare professional should be part of your care team, we'll tell you. We regularly collaborate with physicians, physical therapists, massage therapists, acupuncturists, and other movement professionals to help clients receive the support they need.
